Unfortunately termites are a way of life for all home owners. To make matters worse, the Eastern Subterranean termite found in the tri-state area happens to be the most common species in North America and is responsible for causing more than 90 percent of all termite damage in the U.S. It is estimated that 1 in 22 have a termite problem.
Some estimate that three times as many homes nationwide are damaged by termites compared to those damaged by fire. The cost of termite damage exceeds $1 billion, most of which is not covered by the typical homeowners insurance policy. That is why discovering the presence of termites can prove so disturbing and crucial. A mature queen can lay thousands of eggs each year. Termite colonies usually mature in about 3-6 years, at which swarmers are produced. The swarmers leave the colony through "swarm castles". Swarming from a single colony usually occurs 3-6 years after the colony is produced and often occurs in several bursts that may take several days and can go on for up to 15 years.
Hence, the first step involved in effective termite control is conducting periodic inspections throughout the property, since termite activity can remain undetected for years. Although termiticides are available for private use, the "Do-it-Yourself" approach for treating a termite infestation is never recommended.
Firstly, many of the products available to the general public are mainly for exterior surface treatment. However, applying such a product to a swarm of termites or the surface of infested wood kills only those termites, and will not protect the interior parts of that infested wood nor does it protect the dwelling house from further termite attacks. Additionally, termites discovered in one area, does not necessarily mean that it's the only infested area.
Secondly, a thorough inspection can show if the termites are also feeding someplace else. Finally, simply spraying the soil surface and/or exterior foundation wall will not prevent a termite infestation below ground and possibly entering the facility from below ground.
